‘Ant-Man’s’ Evangeline Lilly talks The Wasp and stepping up on movie sets

The “Ant-Man” sequel may be about tiny superheroes, but the film is making a big statement about female empowerment by featuring Evangeline Lilly’s The Wasp not only in the title but giving her a larger stake in Marvel’s sprawling movie franchise.

“Ant-Man and The Wasp,” the 20th film in the Marvel cinematic universe that includes “Black Panther,” ″Iron Man” and “Avengers: Infinity War,” is the first one in the series to include a female character in a title role. The prominence of The Wasp, a character who has major roles in the “Ant-Man” and “Avengers” comic books, comes after years of fan anticipation for a female Marvel superhero to get her own film.

“I worked really closely with Evangeline, and we talked about, ‘Now we’re going to have a chance to make a fully formed hero, and we want her to be as dimensional as possible. And we don’t want her to be a hero who is always glammed up with hair and makeup. We wanted her to be a little sweaty. And we want her, like, when that helmet comes off, her hair is in a ponytail, because that’s the practical thing you would do,’” Reed said.

“I wanted her to have a signature style that little girls, like I was when I was a feminine, girly little girl, would be able to fall in love with,” the actress says of her character, the first in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to get equal billing with a man.

The Wasp Battles Ghost in New “Ant-Man and the Wasp” Clip

Marvel Studios has released a new clip from Ant-Man and The Wasp that shows Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) in action against the villain known as Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen).

In the clip, the Wasp takes on Ghost while Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) watch from a van outside. Once Scott sees that Hope is in trouble, he springs into action. Hank stops him and gives Scott a new Ant-Man suit.

Ant-Man and The Wasp is a creative and self-contained adventure with Lilly’s new heroine stealing the stage. As she said in the post-credits scene of the original Ant-Man film, ‘It’s about damn time.’ With references to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe and seeds discretely planted for future films, Ant-Man and The Wasp is tremendous fun, action-packed, and Marvel’s best second movie in a single franchise since Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

What do you think of this Ant-Man and the Wasp clip? Does it have you excited to see the movie? Ant-Man and the Wasp opens in theaters on July 6th.

Ant-Man and the Wasp’s Evangeline Lilly calls out male Marvel co-stars for whining about wearing costumes

Chris Evans, Chadwick Boseman, and Paul Bettany are just some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe stars who have said that their superhero costumes are uncomfortable to wear.

But Ant-Man and the Wasp star Evangeline Lilly has brilliantly called out her male co-stars by explaining the real reason why they’ve been complaining.

The actress, who plays Hope van Dyne aka the Wasp in this summer’s Marvel blockbuster, said that she didn’t find suiting up in her own costume that bad and pointed out a key difference between a man and a woman having to cope with wearing something uncomfortable.

“I have been hearing Marvel male superheroes complaining about their suits for years,” she told BackstageOL. “And I got into my suit, and I was wearing it, working in it, doing my thing, and I was like, ‘It’s just not that bad’.

“Do I have the most comfortable suit in the MCU? Or, have men not had the life experience of being uncomfortable for the sake of looking good, and they’re just like, ‘What is this? This sucks! Why? Why do I have to go through this?’, whereas a woman’s like, ‘I don’t know, it’s normal’.

“I wear heels to work, and I’m uncomfortable all day. You get used to it. You just tune it out.”
